Accessibility statement

We want everyone to be able to use this website and to stay in the house. This page says what we aim for, how we check, what is still imperfect, and what the building offers.

Our standard

This website aims to meet the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2 at level AA. Text has at least the contrast the guidelines ask for, every control can be used from the keyboard, focus is always visible, headings and landmarks are in order, and every photograph has a description. Animation stops when your device is set to reduce motion.

How it is checked

  • An automated check (axe) runs on every page in the test suite that must pass before the site is published, and it fails on any serious problem.
  • Layouts are tested at a phone width of 360 pixels, with no sideways scrolling, and at desktop widths.
  • The keyboard paths through the booking form, the galleries and the 360 view are tested by script.
  • The Lighthouse accessibility audit is run on every page.

Automated checks find only part of the problems. We have not yet tested the site with a panel of people who use screen readers, switches or magnification every day, and we would like to.

Known limits

  • The 360 view of a room is a picture you can look around. It can be turned with the arrow keys, and each point of interest is also a button. A flat view shows the same panorama as an ordinary scrolling image, and the text about each point is on the page. The panorama itself has no audio description.
  • The neighbourhood map is stylised and not to scale. Every pin links to a written entry that has the walking time and the address, and nothing on the map is only on the map.
  • The date pickers are the ones your browser provides, so they look and behave differently from one browser to another. You can also type a date.
  • The photographs are illustrative. Their descriptions say what is in the picture, not which room it shows.

The building

Casa Vellum is a townhouse from the 1760s on a steep, cobbled street, and some things cannot be changed. A lift serves every floor from the cellar to the third. The top floor, with the Attic Studios, is reached by 18 steps from the lift.

  • The four Courtyard rooms are on the ground floor and are step-free from the front door by a short ramp. Courtyard room 2 has a roll-in shower.
  • The Alcove, Tagus View, Terrace Suite and Apartment rooms are step-free once you are inside, by the lift.
  • The lift has an 80 cm door and is 110 cm wide and 140 cm deep. It takes a wheelchair with one companion.
  • The hammam in the cellar and the breakfast room on the ground floor are reached by the lift. The roof terrace and pool are above the top floor and are reached by stairs, so they are not step-free. The courtyard garden on the ground floor is.
  • The street outside is cobbled and steep. A taxi leaves you two minutes from the door, and we will meet you and carry your cases.

The full table of rooms is on the house page. If you want to talk through what you need, write to us before you book.
