About the room

Twenty square metres on the first floor, with a double bed set into an arched alcove and a bay window over the lane. The quiet choice, and the one most guests book twice.

The Alcove rooms sit on the first floor, where the house was once the family's front rooms. The ceilings are still barrel vaulted, and the bed fits into the curve of the wall the way a loaf fits a tin. It is a small room that does not feel small, because every piece of furniture has been chosen to be low.

The bay window looks down the lane. You will see the neighbours' washing, a corner of the tiled house opposite and, if you lean out, a strip of the river. The floor is original pine, scrubbed and oiled each spring by Dona Graça, who has kept houses in Alfama for thirty years.

The shower room is tiled in white and green, with a rain shower, a deep shelf for your things and a heated towel rail. There is a small desk by the window, enough for a laptop and a coffee, and a wardrobe with real hangers.

What the 360 view shows

The bed

The mattress is firm on one side and softer on the other. If you prefer one or the other, tell us and we will swap the topper before you arrive.

The bay window

The window opens fully and has wooden shutters. The seat in the bay is deep enough to sit sideways with a book.

The shower room

Through this door, a white and green tiled shower room with a rain shower and a heated towel rail.

The room at seven in the morning and seven in the evening

7 am

At seven the light comes in sideways through the bay window and lands on the foot of the bed. The lane is quiet except for the baker's van, which stops outside number 9 at ten to seven. Breakfast starts at eight, so there is time to stay where you are.

7 pm

By seven the room turns amber. The lamps are low, the window is open an inch, and the sound from the lane is plates and a radio two doors down. If you are dressing for dinner, the wine bar downstairs has a table by the stairs that guests tend to forget about.
