About the room
Twenty-six square metres under the original timber roof on the fourth floor. Skylights instead of windows, a low bed on a platform, and the best sleep in the house.
The three Attic Studios fill the top floor, under the old chestnut roof timbers. We took out the 1960s ceiling and found the beams in good order, dark with age and as thick as a man's waist. The ceiling slopes on both sides, so the room is for people who do not mind ducking at the edges.
Two skylights bring in the sky. You lie in bed and watch swifts in summer and cloud in winter, and on clear nights a few stars. The bed is a 150 by 200 cm double on a low timber platform, with storage underneath, and there is a long writing table under the lower eave.
The rooms are reached by the last flight of stairs from the lift, eighteen steps in all. That is the price of the quiet. Nothing above you but the roof, and nobody on the floor but two other guests.

What the 360 view shows
The bed
The bed sits on a low timber platform beneath the skylights. The mattress is natural latex, which sleeps cool in summer.
The skylights
Two skylights with blackout blinds on a cord. Open them an inch for air; the roof overhang keeps the rain out.
The writing table
A long oak table under the lower eave, with a lamp, a socket in the floor beneath it and a view of the beams.
The room at seven in the morning and seven in the evening
7 am
At seven the skylights go from grey to white to gold. Swifts cross the glass in summer. Without the blinds it is hard to sleep past it, and with them it is hard to wake, so choose according to your day.
7 pm
At seven the roof has been warm all day and gives some of it back. Lie on the bed with the skylights open and listen to the street come up through the tiles, a fork on a plate, a laugh, somebody practising the guitar.
