About the room
Twenty-eight square metres on the second floor, with a king bed that faces a tall window over the roofs of Alfama to the Tagus. The room people photograph, and then cannot describe.
The three Tagus View rooms are on the second floor at the front of the house. Each has a king bed, 180 by 200 cm, placed so that you wake up facing the window rather than the wall. From the pillow you see a staircase of terracotta roofs, the dome of a church, and on a clear morning the grey-blue line of the river and the south bank.
The window is tall, with a shallow balcony rail outside it and shutters inside. We kept the original proportions and added a second pane for sound, so you hear the city as a murmur rather than a crowd. There is an armchair in the corner by the glass, and a small table that is the right height for a breakfast tray.
The bathroom has a bath as well as a shower, which is rare in an eighteenth-century house and took the plumber most of a winter. The tiles are hand painted in two blues, made by a workshop in Beco do Forno who also did the courtyard panel repairs.
Look around
A 360 degree view you can drag, or turn with the arrow keys. A 360 view of a comparable room, shown here as an illustration.

What the 360 view shows
The bed
A king bed on a low wooden frame. The two red cushions are the only colour we allow on the cover, and they travel with the room.
The river window
The tall window faces south over the roofs. At the start of the evening the sun lands on the far wall and slowly climbs it.
The bathroom
A bath, a separate rain shower, and a window of frosted glass that lets in the light without the view.
The room at seven in the morning and seven in the evening
7 am
At seven the sun has just cleared the hill behind the house and the roofs turn the colour of apricots. Seagulls, a motor scooter, a window being opened. You can have a tray brought up at half past seven if you ask the night before.
7 pm
At seven the river goes silver and then pink, and the lights come on in the houses below you one at a time. This is the hour to sit in the armchair with a glass of something from the bar and do nothing.
